A knot is a small piece of the system, but it is one you trust with everything. Whether you are clipping into your first indoor route or building towards weekends on rock, this rock climbing knots guide focuses on the knots and checks that earn their place through repeated, correct use.
The aim is not to collect clever rope tricks. It is to understand what each knot does, where its limits are, and when to stop and ask an instructor or experienced climbing partner for a second set of eyes. Knots should be learnt hands-on, practised close to the ground, and checked every time they are used.
The knot that matters most: the figure of eight
For most climbers, the rethreaded figure of eight is the standard knot for tying into a harness. It is easy to inspect, strong when correctly tied, and familiar to partners, instructors and wall staff. That visibility matters. A knot that your belayer can recognise at a glance is a safer knot than an obscure alternative tied perfectly in private.
Start by tying a figure of eight in the rope, leaving enough tail to rethread it through both tie-in points on your harness. Follow the original knot back through, keeping the strands parallel as you retrace the shape. When dressed correctly, it should look neat rather than bunched or crossed, with two clear loops and no unnecessary twists.
Finish with a stopper knot - commonly a double overhand - tied close to the figure of eight. The exact tail length and preferred stopper method can vary between walls, instructors and governing-body practice, so follow the policy where you climb. What does not vary is the need for a clearly finished knot with a sufficient tail.
Do not attach the rope to a gear loop, a belay loop, or a single tie-in point. Gear loops are for carrying equipment, while the belay loop has a different job in the harness system. Use the manufacturer-marked tie-in points and inspect them for wear before every session.
Dress, set, check
A correctly tied knot still needs a routine. Before leaving the ground, dress the knot so its strands lie cleanly, pull it snug, and ask your partner to inspect it. Then check theirs. This takes seconds and can catch a missed rethread, a badly positioned stopper, or a knot tied through the wrong part of the harness.
Partner checks are not about doubting somebody's ability. Even experienced climbers get distracted when the weather turns, the queue at the route builds, or an unfamiliar crag makes the start feel hurried. Make the check part of the rhythm: knot, harness, belay device, carabiner, rope end.

Once you move beyond straightforward indoor top-roping, knots start to serve different purposes. Some join cord, some attach a rope to an anchor, and some create friction for a backup. Their usefulness depends on the discipline, the rope or cord diameter, the load direction and the anchor arrangement. Learn them in context rather than assuming one knot suits every job.
Clove hitch for adjustable anchors
The clove hitch is a fast, adjustable hitch commonly used to attach a rope to a locking carabiner at an anchor. Its great advantage is that you can alter the length easily while remaining connected, which helps when positioning yourself at a stance.
It also has limits. A clove hitch can loosen or shift under certain loading patterns, and its security depends on correct use with an appropriate locking carabiner and a sound anchor. It is not a substitute for understanding anchor construction, equalisation and the forces created in a fall. If multi-pitch climbing is on your horizon, learn this knot as part of a proper course, not from a diagram the night before a big route.
Double fisherman's for cord loops
The double fisherman's bend is widely used to join the ends of accessory cord into a closed loop, often for a friction hitch such as a prusik. It forms a compact, dependable connection when tied and tightened correctly.
It is particularly useful because prusik loops are part of many abseil backup systems and rescue setups. But cord is not rope, and different diameters, materials and sheath conditions affect how a knot behaves. Use suitable accessory cord, leave appropriate tails, and inspect an older loop closely for glazing, stiffness, cuts or contamination. Retire it if there is any doubt.
Prusik hitch for friction and backup
A prusik hitch wraps a cord loop around a climbing rope so that it grips when loaded and slides when released. Climbers commonly use a friction hitch as a backup while abseiling, but the right hitch, cord diameter and configuration depend on the rope system and the user's training.
Practise making it while standing on the ground. It should grip reliably when weighted, release when unloaded, and sit in a position that cannot be pulled into the abseil device. A friction hitch is only useful if you understand the whole abseil setup, including the anchor, rope ends, device and communication with your partner.
Overhand bends and why context matters
An overhand bend is often used to join two ropes for an abseil. It is simple, compact and can pull more easily over rock than bulkier alternatives. Yet this is not a knot to copy casually from social media. Rope joining is a technical decision involving compatible ropes, tail length, knot orientation, the direction of pull, terrain and the possibility of the knot catching in a crack.
For newer climbers, the practical lesson is straightforward: do not improvise a rope-joining knot at the top of a crag. Train with a qualified instructor or an experienced mentor who can explain the system and supervise your first repetitions.
Knots are only as good as the rope and hardware around them
A tidy figure of eight does not compensate for worn gear or a rushed belay setup. Before climbing, run your hands along the working end of the rope and look for soft spots, flat sections, core showing through the sheath, severe fuzzing or chemical contamination. Keep ropes away from battery acid, fuel and other substances that can damage fibres without making the problem obvious.
Use locking carabiners where the system calls for them, with gates closed and locked. Check that a carabiner is not cross-loaded over an edge or pressed against another component in a way that compromises its strength. At the wall, this becomes habit. Outside, where anchors vary and loose rock adds distractions, habit becomes even more valuable.
Your harness deserves the same attention. Inspect tie-in points for abrasion and follow the manufacturer's retirement guidance. Sunlight, storage conditions and sheer mileage all affect textile equipment. Gear that has been used hard on summer crags, stuffed damp into a rucksack, or left in a hot car needs an honest check before its next outing.
Build knot confidence before you need it
The best place to learn is not a windy ledge. Start at home with a retired length of rope or cord, then practise at the climbing wall until your hands know the sequence without rushing. Say the steps out loud at first: tie-in points, retrace, dress, stopper, partner check. Repetition builds consistency, and consistency is what you want when conditions are less than perfect.
It helps to practise with gloves off and on, in low light, and after your hands are tired. Those are not reasons to accept a poor knot - they are reasons to recognise when you need to slow down. If you cannot clearly inspect what you have tied, untie it and begin again.
A qualified instructor remains the right starting point for anyone learning to belay, lead climb, build anchors or abseil. Videos and diagrams are useful reminders, but they cannot correct the feel of a loose hitch, the routing of a rope through a harness, or a misunderstanding between partners.
