A loose quickdraw gate, a worn belay device or the wrong connector at a critical point can turn an otherwise brilliant day on the crag into a problem. This climbing hardware guide is built around the kit that connects you to the rope, the wall and your partner - and the decisions that make that system work together. Hardware is not the most glamorous part of climbing, but it is where dependable performance matters most.
The right choices depend on where and how you climb. A first indoor session, a sport-climbing holiday and a long trad route each ask different things of your rack. Start with the essentials, learn their intended use from a qualified instructor, and add specialist pieces only when your climbing genuinely calls for them.
Why climbing hardware deserves more thought
Climbing hardware is designed to manage forces, create secure connections and help climbers move efficiently. It includes your harness and belay device, but also carabiners, quickdraws, slings, protection and anchors. Each item has a specific job. Using a strong piece of kit in the wrong orientation or application can still create a weak link.
That is why buying a matched system is usually smarter than collecting random bargains. A rope works with a belay device of the right diameter range. A locking carabiner needs a shape that sits properly with your device or hitch. Quickdraws need durable dogbones and carabiners suited to repeated clipping. The best rack is not necessarily the biggest or lightest one. It is the one you understand, inspect and can use confidently.
Climbing hardware guide: build from the core system
For most new climbers, the first hardware purchases should support indoor climbing and straightforward single-pitch sport routes. These are the pieces you will use often, learn quickly and keep using as your experience grows.
Harness, helmet and belay device
A harness should fit snugly above your hips without restricting movement or breathing. Check that the waistbelt cannot be pulled down over your hips, and that the leg loops are comfortable when you lift a knee high. Adjustable leg loops offer flexibility for layering and shared use; fixed loops are often lighter and feel less bulky for regular indoor climbing.
A helmet is a sensible choice outdoors, even on routes that look tidy from the ground. Rockfall, dropped gear and a swing into the wall are all real possibilities. Prioritise a secure fit, good coverage and compatibility with your hair, sunglasses and head torch if you expect long days.
Your belay device is a control tool, not an automatic safety guarantee. Tube-style devices are versatile, light and commonly used for lead belaying, abseiling and multi-pitch climbing. Assisted-braking devices can offer an additional margin during belaying, particularly when catching falls or lowering, but they still demand correct brake-hand technique and practice. Choose a device compatible with your rope diameter, then learn its operation from an experienced instructor before taking it outside.
Locking carabiners and essential connectors
Locking carabiners belong at critical points such as your belay device, personal tether and some anchor systems. A screwgate is simple and durable, while twist-lock and other auto-locking designs can be quicker to operate. Neither is universally better. Screwgates are easy to inspect visually, but must be checked for a fully closed gate. Auto-lockers reduce the chance of forgetting to lock, yet require familiarity and can be harder to handle with cold fingers.
Shape matters as much as the locking mechanism. HMS or pear-shaped lockers provide room for belay devices and Italian hitches. D-shaped lockers are compact and strong for many anchor connections. Avoid cross-loading any carabiner, where force runs across the gate or narrow axis rather than along the spine. It is one of the most common hardware errors and one that careful system set-up can prevent.
Rope: the piece that sets the standard
Although climbers do not always think of rope as hardware, it is the centre of the system. Indoor and sport climbers commonly choose a single dynamic rope, balancing durability, handling and weight. A thicker rope generally tolerates frequent top-roping and rough belays well, while a slimmer rope can feel easier to clip and carry on longer approaches. The trade-off is that thinner ropes may wear faster and require a belay device that handles their diameter properly.
Check the rope’s middle mark, sheath condition and ends before every session. Retire it after significant damage, severe loading, chemical exposure or when its history is uncertain. A rope that looks mostly fine is not automatically a rope you should trust.
Add hardware for the climbing you actually do
Once the core system is familiar, your next purchases should follow your discipline rather than a generic checklist.
For indoor and sport climbing, quickdraws are the natural addition. Look for a set with smooth, easy-to-clip gates, a solid lower carabiner that stays correctly orientated, and dogbones that are comfortable to grab when working a route. Short draws are useful on straight bolt lines; longer options reduce rope drag where the route wanders. If you are starting out, a modest set of reliable draws is more useful than a huge collection of specialist lengths.
Trad climbing brings a broader range of decisions. Passive protection such as nuts is durable, compact and highly effective in the right cracks. Cams protect parallel-sided placements that nuts cannot always hold, but cost more and demand careful placement and maintenance. Hexes, slings and additional carabiners may also have a place depending on the rock type and route style. This is not equipment to learn by trial and error above a poor landing. Get practical instruction from a qualified coach or experienced mentor, practise placements at ground level and learn to assess rock quality as well as gear placement.
Multi-pitch climbing adds another layer: you may need extra lockers, extension slings, a guide-mode belay device, a personal anchor arrangement and a way to manage the rope at stances. Weight matters, but organisation matters too. Hardware that is difficult to identify or retrieve when you are tired can slow the team down and complicate a simple belay.
Winter and alpine objectives require their own technical equipment, from crampons and ice axes to ice screws and specialist anchors. These tools are not a standard extension of a summer rack. Conditions, route judgement and movement skills are inseparable from the kit, so seek appropriate training before committing to terrain where a mistake has serious consequences.
Make quickdraws, slings and anchors work together
Slings are useful for extending protection, reducing rope drag and building anchors, but their versatility can encourage casual use. Keep them away from sharp edges, inspect them for cuts, fading and abrasion, and protect them from unnecessary UV exposure. Dyneema slings are light and low bulk; nylon slings are often easier to handle and can offer more dynamic stretch. Choose based on the use rather than assuming lighter is always better.
At anchors, simple and clearly equalised systems are often the easiest to assess. Keep carabiners correctly loaded, avoid excessive moving parts and understand whether the fixed hardware is suitable for lowering or abseiling. Fixed gear can corrode or loosen over time, even at popular venues. If you are unsure about an anchor, stop and ask someone with the right experience rather than relying on assumptions.
Inspection is part of every climb
Good hardware lasts longer when it is checked routinely. Before leaving home, inspect carabiner gates for smooth action and make sure locking sleeves work cleanly. Look for sharp edges, deep grooves, cracks, corrosion and excessive wear. Examine harness tie-in points, belay loops and stitching for fraying or discolouration. Check quickdraw dogbones, slings and rope for damage that could affect strength.
After a wet, sandy or salty day, clean and dry equipment as recommended by its manufacturer. Store hardware away from direct sunlight, chemicals and damp garages. Do not modify carabiners, drill equipment or use climbing hardware for towing, lifting or other jobs outside its intended purpose.
Keep track of age as well as appearance. Textile equipment has a finite service life, even when it spends much of its time in a cupboard. Record major falls, questionable incidents and purchase dates. If the history of a second-hand item is unclear, especially a rope, harness, sling or helmet, walk away from it.
Choose confidence, not clutter
